This is the first of a series of News articles I plan on posting, writing about Abstract photography and what I noticed while going through thousands upon thousands of images on DeviantArt.
First up: Nature!
----------------------
A search for "nature" in the Newest section of Photography->Abstract & Surreal->Abstract yields a little over 3500 results.
Some of the things I noticed...
1) Too. Many. Photoshop. Filters. I'm sure this would be noticed in any search of DA's extensive Photography section, but c'mon. I must have seen hundreds of images that the respective artists should have categorized under Photomanipulation. Three of the worst offenders: Glowing Edges, Polar Coordinates, and Twirl.
Taking a bad picture and messing it up some more does not make it abstract, it just makes it a bad, messed up photomanipulation.
2) Lots of close-ups of wood. And I mean tons. Some were good, most were not. Luckily, no wood in a "human anatomy" sense was to be found.
3) Keyword abuse. As in, "Here's a picture of some man-made metal, with no nature in it at all, but I'll put nature in the keywords because it's Act Like An Idiot Day."
If you attach keywords to your pictures that have nothing to do with the picture, then every day is Act Like An Idiot Day for you.
4) Fairly equal amounts of color and black & white. This was quite surprising, as I was expecting an overwhelming majority of color photography. Although most of my favorites were color, there were still a decent number of good black & whites.
5) Quite the collection of under-appreciated work (as well as a few appreciated ones). My favorites are below. They all have at least a semi-focus on nature, or at least lot of nature in them.

I was happy to see a strong lack of Macro shots here, since there is a dedicated Macro section within DA.
What I appreciated the most, however, was seeing how much experimentation into abstractness is going on here. From crazy angles of trees to odd close-ups (not macros, just closer-composed or closer-cropped pictures) of branches to not-quite-landscapes to the clashing of man versus nature: there is a big variety to be had in the Abstract area of DA's Photography section. I would highly suggest checking it out...
Until next time!

Saying Goodbye to DeviantArt
When I joined deviantArt over 7 years ago, I was a very different person and a very different artist. Since joining that day, I've continued to hone my photography with the help of lots of practice, lots of shooting, lots of image-viewing, and some schooling. I'm starting to build a business now and am finding less and less time to dedicate to my online presence, especially with the number of sites I currently participate (or try to participate) in.
This site helped me grow and opened me to so many different types of art, including many types and styles of photography. This was a great place to learn and grow, but now I am in the process of
An exposition on why I need to post more pictures
I joined DeviantArt on July 11, 2005, and quickly became a fan of not only the quality of the site, but the quality of the art within the site. It wasn't long before I was uploading my own pictures, going on the forums for feedback, and generally trying to get opinions on my work. My early DA days were filled with me commenting on dozens upon dozens of pictures every day, and receiving little in return, all in the hope that one day I would be "popular" and get lots and lots of comments and +favs and that whole deal. I submitted pictures every day for months, and constantly had a backlog of pictures to upload.
Flash forward 6 years (!) and my
Augmented Photography: win a journal feature!
CONTEST IS OVER, but you can still play because I'd still love to hear feedback about this idea!
I'll be trying it again in the next few weeks, and this time I will make it a News post instead of a journal (hopefully for more participants!)

Hello everyone! I'm trying out a concept that recently popped into my head while thinking of ways to interact with my watchers. See below
AUGMENTED PHOTOGRAPHY - BALLARD
An experimental series exploring a new way to "interact" with street photography.
The idea is simple:
1. Take abstract shots along a street
2. Upload the best ones
3. Include a link to the street via Bing Streetside
4. Ask v
New website! Feedback, anyone?
I finally took some initiative with my website and "fixed" it...by moving it to Zenfolio! After trying out the service for a few days and discovering not only how easy it was to use, but also how easy it was to customize, I finally made the switch domain-wise last night. If you could take 30 seconds to quickly look at the site and let me know how it looks in general, I would greatly appreciate it :D
